Art Paintings – Exploring the Artist’s Identity

I have outlined the experiential processes of artistic painting, the processes of dialogue and the processes of reflection or testimony. These processes are taken from my own personal research into my artistic identity and the findings have largely informed my practice. This story is a guide for artists who wish to deepen their artistic identity or for those interested in exploring the processes of artistic painting.

Art Painting Processes

The processes of painting in this research strive to study the identity of the artist through the exploration of consciousness. The basic components of what, where, when, how and why take place will be described in the following applications, which form a personal account.

These processes have been chosen instead of other means because of the quality of the immediate and fluid response of the painting. Despite my training in ceramics, my passion is artistic painting.

What Art Paintings Include

In my exploration, six art paintings will be made. These will be abstract paintings and figurative paintings. I will use alternative surfaces. The paintings will include professionally stretched canvases with a concrete base (thick black plastic).

The dimensions of each painting will be uniform: 120 x 70 x 5 cm. The media used will include oil paint, enamel, oil sticks, Black Japan stains, shellac, pastel, charcoal and ink. The primary artistic focus in this process will reside in the use of alternative materials in the painting and in the use of alternative surfaces. Boundaries can be intentionally pushed through the use of building materials to create aesthetics on surfaces not intended for this purpose.

When Painting Will Be Performed

The proposed plan is to paint every second Tuesday and every Thursday for a period of six weeks. This art painting will occur at night in two or three time intervals every hour.

Where they will take place

The space will consist of a studio facility in a closed garage. For research purposes, the computer and reference materials will be installed on one side of the garage space and the workbench with art painting materials on the other side. I plan to be able to move quickly and freely between the two.

How They Will Happen

The intention is to include a chronogram of the processes of artistic painting, which will consist of certain moments in the coming months. Ideas to limit the time of painting have been considered.

Dialogue with Art Paintings

The processes of personal dialogue undertaken in this research combine elements of heuristic research, but allow for an individual narrative.

These processes are based on the internal search mechanisms present within the processes of the creative self. The processes relate to a conversation or dialogue that takes place between the researcher, the artist, and a higher consciousness of the self, a work of art, or another closely studied object. Many artists and art therapists have used these methods in their research and investigation.

Why the dialogue will be conducted in this way

The dialogue process aims to provide a different level of awareness. It is anticipated that I will connect with my artistic paintings through the dialogue processes. Dialogue can inform me about levels that are not available to me experimentally.

What the dialogue will include

This process aims to encompass a journey into artistic painting. The aim is to literally enter artistic painting through passages of different levels of consciousness. In order to make space available to connect with these other levels of consciousness, the following will be used: residence; the search for the self through thought; meditation and contemplation. Perceptions can come through hearing the words in my mind, intuition, or new concepts emerging from or within internal frames of reference.

Where the dialogue will take place

This process is internal, while the external and inter-objective realities of my environment can influence internal mechanisms. The proposed dialogue will take place in the study space designated to write this research. The arrangement of the computer on the one hand and the paintings on the other is intentionally designed to facilitate access to writing when a dialogue occurs.

When the dialogue will take place

The method of dialogue within this research will be addressed through the lack of a structured timetable. As I have not tried this process before, I am not sure that it can fit into a time frame. I am not sure whether I can convene the dialogue at will; or whether it will arise indiscriminately.

How the dialogue will take place

This is largely impossible to determine at this time. There is a commitment to total immersion in the processes of this research and dialogue is likely to emerge naturally from the artistic paintings through channels due to the immersion process. It is anticipated that the creation of a unique personal space for communication with my art paintings will reveal and allow documentation of how the process occurs.

Reflection on Art Paintings

Why the reflection will be carried out in this way The process of reflection formulates the basis for the intimate connectivity of the processes of artistic painting and dialogue. It forms the fabric from which the evaluation cloth is cut. The sacred testimony will allow space and time to measure experience and stop at the emergence of new information.

The process of reflection aims to bring together artistic paintings and dialogue processes and to provide the stand-back point of view, indispensable for artistic painting and primordial self-investigation.

What Reflection Will Include

The process of reflection in this research will include transpersonal processes as a method of self-inquiry. It will evoke notions of the witness. These reflection processes will present a unique testimony of the experience of artistic painting, the experience of dialogue and experiences in general.
